Pipe organs voiced and kept in Columbus

DB Pipe Organs LLC sells, designs, restores, and maintains pipe organs and keyboard instruments from 4781 Frenchpark Ct. Robert Tilson leads the bench: case, wind, and pipe speech checked against the seats.

Eight lines of work

What leaves the bench

Five photographs show rooms and benches. Design, maintenance, and parts are decided before a case is opened.

01

Voicing and intonation

Tuning sets pitch. Voicing sets cut-up and volume once the rank is heard in the room.

02

Concert halls

Ceiling, seating, and how often the room is booked come before any stop list.

03

Consoles and key desks

Manuals, pedals, and couplers for players who already know the repertoire.

04

Keyboard instruments

Pianos, practice keyboards, and accessories for teachers, churches, and home players in Columbus.

05

Restoration benches

Worn actions and damaged pipework are replaced so a tuning can hold through the season.

06

Design and new work

Case, wind, and stop list are drawn for recital, worship, or a classroom — measured before anything is ordered.

07

Scheduled maintenance

A visit covers tuning, the blower, the reservoir, and parts to order before they fail.

08

Original parts

Leather, magnets, and pipework are matched to the instrument so the builder’s sound stays.

The shop

A Columbus bench led by Robert Tilson

DB Pipe Organs LLC opened in Columbus in 2021. Robert Tilson runs sales, design, tuning, voicing, restoration, and installation.

Halls call when a cipher sticks, a rank dies in the back seats, or a stop list must fit the ceiling. Pitch and speech are read in the room.

Order of work

Five services, named in sequence

Each line is a separate visit, from the same bench at Frenchpark Ct.

01

Sales and design

Organs and keyboards are specified for a measured room: wind, stops, ceiling, and use. Musical equipment is sold from the same shop, and nothing new is proposed until the room has been walked.

02

Tuning, voicing, and restoration

Pitch comes first, then pipe speech, so a rank carries to the last row. Leather, actions, and damaged pipes are rebuilt so the tuning holds the next season.

03

Regular maintenance

A scheduled visit notes the blower, the reservoir, and parts likely to fail. A church, a school, and a concert hall do not share one interval.

04

Original parts and components

Pipe metal, leather, magnets, and key coverings are matched on the bench. A modern substitute is turned down when it would change the builder’s sound.

05

Consultations for halls and schools

The room is walked with the people who book it before a purchase or a rebuild. Columbus halls and schools then get a written order of the work.

Acoustic audit

How a first visit proceeds

A listening visit with a written scope, booked by appointment, decides which job comes first.

  1. Name the room

Instrument, a Columbus address, and the fault: pitch, speech, a cipher, or a dead note.

  2. Listen on site

Wind, action, and pipe speech are checked from the seats, not only from the console.

  3. Receive a scope

Tuning only, voicing, parts, or restoration, written in the order the work should happen.

  4. Book the next visit

Tuning and larger work are scheduled apart, so a hall is not closed twice for the same fault.
